Interesting that you mention the German connection when Schmetzer's background is definitely German, as was Sigi's before him. I, too, like the strong defense idea, but for it to work you have to do your best not to give up an early goal (ala SKC). There has been some lobbying for Brian to change things up a bit and start Bruin up top with Ruidiaz in some form of a 4-4-2. I know I'd like to see it tried. However, the Sounders are on a 9-match win streak and Schmetzer is understandably loathe to change anything. That's probably one reason Dempsey retired- he knew he wasn't going to get much of a chance going forward as long as the Sounders were winning.

I'm thinking that if for some reason the offense dries up, then that might force Brian's hand into experimenting with a Bruin/Ruidiaz pairing up front. Let's hope not- I'd rather see the Sounders keep up the Streak and take it all the way to the Final!

Yes, my husband ordered all of his team equipment at Schmetzer's soccer business. I know I spent longer than usual, waiting in the car, while the gentlemen discussed futbal! And, reflecting on Lodiero...I remember his play the year we "won it all". I felt that he was great and much of the reason they turned the season around. So, maybe, THAT Lodiero will "lead us on to victory"? And I think your idea of pairing Bruin/Ruidiaz would be worth a try...Bruin is much harder to smother than Ruidiaz!

On the first highlighted part - yes, lots of people are open. But the open people are either behind the ball (CMs or CBs) or out wide (FBs). Neither is particularly conducive to scoring goals.

On the second one, I'm curious as to why you mentioned Zakuani and Morris? The one obvious thing they have in common is they are fast but in terms of scoring or assisting they're not overly impressive. Of the attacking players named above - Zakuani, Morris, Lodeiro and Ruidiaz, Ruidiaz has far and away the best strike rate. Morris is slightly ahead of Lodeiro, which I think is expected since the former is a forward, but my memory of Morris goals is largely him running onto through balls from Lodeiro. I absolutely loved Zakuani but he's last of the group and it's really not close.

...but when Zakuani played with Fucito, I felt the offense was very threatening. I have an image of Zakuani flying down the sidelines and crossing it to Fucito. And his speed made him hard to guard. Morris, I agree, is a threat because of his speed...and I also agree is not in the top rank of goal scorers. I only mentioned them both, not as my favorite players, but because they were examples of players not buried by the defenders on the other side.
Obviously, if we're talking the best ...then Dempsey , Obifemi and Montero come to mind (but I don't know their stats
