Frankly the Timbers have a better defense than we do right now. They are more difficult to break down and their counter-attack is effective, as long as Valeri is on the field. Remember they tied LAFC 2-2. It wouldn't surprise me to see them near the top of the West at the end of the year, if there's an actual season.
Although it pains me to say it, they are a better team than the Sounders. My hope is that the success Portland are having and the relative failure of the Sounders in the Covid Cup will be a goad to the FO to realize that changes need to be made if they are going to have any real success if whatever is left of the season.
Regarding Valeri, Savarese's tactic of bringing him on in the second half is paying off. Not having to go the full 90, he can utilize his skills better against the tired legs of their opponents. The Timbers' confidence just keeps growing as the tournament goes on.
I had been hoping that the Sounders could have played the Timbers in the tournament, but it might be better that the Sounders didn't have to suffer that further humiliation. And, BTW, it was fun to watch MUTD take LAFC out, with Alonso and Tyler Miller playing key roles.
