I see it like this: Lagerwey came in to a successful club with a large, passionate fan base, with an FO/owners who were willing to spend, and the product on the pitch was consistently inching upward. Nothing he has done was remarkable or even special. He walked in to a cake job, and all he needed to do was support what was going on to continue our growth and success. But then he got lazy, cheap, or made bad choices (certain signings)--maybe a combination. The impact of his errors weren't immediately noticeable; they took time to show (and we are seeing that impact now). I do not think him being GM led to use going to three MLS Cups, winning two, and winning CCL. I think that was bound to happen.
I'll close by honestly saying, I am being a bit hyperbolic, but I still firmly contend with any semi-decent GM our accomplishments would have been the same. A good GM would have seen us at the top of the table because they'd have given Schmetzer a stronfee roster.
Even I can't be that hard on him.
The reality is we went from irrelevance to MLS champions to CONCACAF champs during his reign. Yes, a lot of that is Schmetzer, but a lot of it is also seriously upping our transfers. Remember Shalrie Joseph, Gspurning, Tiffert, and Traore? Remember drafting Andrew Duran, a man who never played an MLS minute, when Dom Dwyer was still on the board AS A GENERATION ADIDAS PICK??
Lagerwey was great when spending real money on Lodeiro, Ruidiaz, and JP (although that deal was structured stupidly). Draft picks were as good as could be expected; Cristian Roldan was a masterstroke. He was also able to get bargain players who were instrumental in our success like Torres, Kim, VRod, Leerdam, Jones, Goose, etc. My beef with him was always the lies to the fan base, goofy use of the third DP spot, and refusal to push Hanauer to spend, not with who he was actually bringing in.
But yes, everything started collapsing in 2019 and it's clear Lagerwey has given up. As Ariana Grande would say, thank u, next.
