Had a thought after listening to Garth's media session - does our alliance council GM vote actually hurt us?
Garth brought up that we have a vote coming up this year and a way to dodge the question on if he was looking to leave or not. Not a direct quote but he said something to the effect of needing to respect how that goes. We all know he's going to get a vote to stay, and others have made the point in the past that it's *very* unlikely a GM will ever get voted out. That said, there's now this marker/excuse to prevent contracts from happening. It doesn't behoove Garth or any GM to sign a contract that becomes void after a fan vote. Likewise it doesn't behoove Adrian to sign GMs to contracts and guarantee compensation if the fans vote out the GM. They both know it's not going to happen, but it seems like the perfect line of 'lame but valid' excuse for inaction.
This brings an interesting question to mind for me. If the small percentage of the fan base who is allowed to vote actually voted a GM out, would the organization truly respect that vote? Perhaps my question should be revised: does the organization legally have to respect the vote?
I think not respecting the vote would alienate fans to the point of costing the club ticket and merch sales, but I am not aware of how things are written—whether it’s legally binding. IIRC, the Alliance Council, not long after our first 3rd kit was released, passed (I’m
not sure what to call it) an edict/directive/stipulation that the crest must not be altered, yet the FO wants to rebrand or is at least seriously exploring the notion. So how much “democracy in sport” is really going on? It will be interesting to see how that pans out and may serve as an indicator of how the FO might operate if a GM was ever voted out.
