The first of approximately a dozen times we face the Timbers this season, probably.
Portland is bad. Compared to Seattle, they have played 7 games and in those they have scored 9 fewer and conceded 9 more, and four of the five points they've collected have come from the only two teams below them in the west (SKC and LAG). All that said, it's a rivalry match and I've always felt Portland gets up for these much more than Seattle, so it's not without question we get a turn back the clock performance from Chara, a banger from Asprilla, and some no name scoring a scrappy goal.
Eryk Williamson is one person who won't kill us this time as he's out for the season. I admire the player and don't wish ill on him and his injury situation, but I'm glad that at least he won't kill us (again). In his absense their star man is surely Evander, whom Portland paid a club record transfer fee to acquire. Evander is an attacking midfielder and has only played in 4 matches and has one goal; I would guess injuries/fitness but honestly I'm not sure the details there. Their other potential star is Franck Boli who came over from Ferencveros. I'd be lying if I said I knew anything about his game, but Feren is Henry Wingo's club so I can say definitively he knows a guy from Seattle. Boli hasn't started a match yet but he joined late, and it wouldn't be shocking to see him get his first start here.
On Seattle's side, idk, I guess we're good again? Technically first place in the West (LAFC 2 points back with a game in hand) and generally playing really good soccer. We're 4-0-0 against the teams currently in the 10th-14th places in the West and we're 1-1-1 against the remainder, the win against a clearly overachieving St.Louis. If I had to stake a claim right now I'd say we're back to normal - not the best team, but definitely better than the joke organizations.
The most interesting choice to me in terms of lineup is at CF. After two incredible games Chu cooled off against StLouis and while it would be disingenuous to pin everything on one change, it's true that the dam broke after Chu came off and Ruidiaz came on. I would expect Ruidiaz to return to the lineup, Morris to return to LW, and Schmetzer to be questioned for the decision if we have anything less than a dominating performance.
Prediction: In this rivalry, I feel like when Seattle wins it's some wild shootout and when Portland wins it's some hopeless depressing slog. I looked up no data to support that but regardless I'm going with that impression and picking a 3-2 Seattle win
