If ever you needed an example to define"TRAP GAME," look no further than this next match, folks.
Wednesday, we host the worst team not just in the West but in the league, the first (and only, at this point) team eliminated from the playoffs, the team that has given up the most goals in the league (65), the team with the worst goal difference in MLS (-31), yet the team we lost to 3-2 away back in March: San Jose Earthquakes. As abysmal as their season has been, historically (in MLS play), we are dead even in the head-to-head: 16W-11D-16L. In fact, they've gotten the better of us in the last three meetings--two away losses and a home loss (we have a -4 GD across those matches, being shutout twice).
We are coming off a solid performance on Sunday with the win against SKC. SJ are coming off a 2-0 loss at VAN who handled them clinically. Since SJ are officially out of the playoffs, all they have to play for is pride (which is enough) and being spoilers to our potential seeding. Well, there is the Heritage Cup--we need to win by more than one goal to secure this trophy. Hopefully, complacency does not set in. Even though SJ are a sunken trash barge this year...EVERY. POINT. MATTERS.
I want to see purposeful passing, clinical finishing, a fricking Sounders goal-fest, a Sounders clean sheet, PDLV to show why he is worth the #10 shirt and big bucks, the team to play 90 minutes with intensity and intent. Buuuuuut...
