Ironically I don't really care about the sponsor that much but, sure, I have preferences. I came back to the thread to post my second take and of course to read the thoughts of others. I'll do second take in a post after this one.
Good topic to discuss...It seems some reactions are pretty strong. What I'd really like is a a sponsor that might be more associated with power, strength, fun, guile, what have you. Failing that, my preference for a sponsor associated with men's products reveals that I am pathetic, I have issues, I am a sexist.
Question to those who accuse: If the sponsor was Tampax, would you embrace them as heartily? Don't duck the question. If you can accuse and draw conclusions so readily you should be willing to engage. I say this with no animosity to my friends here.
I really liked Xbox a lot and could not imagine that we would get a better sponsor as far as how the logo looks on the shirt and the general idea they project. For the new sponsor, I would have preferred maybe Alaska Airlines (yeah, I know) or something like that. Maybe some adventure related company or outdoors like REI (no to Camping World but Airstream could be cool), a sport related company like Nike (no need to explain uniform contracts etc). I am not a fan of health care corporate sponsors (like Providence etc). Car company - no to Chevy, yes to Jaguar, maybe to Subaru. Banks - no thanks, but better than some of the worst choices.
One thing these have in common which I never thought about until this discussion has begun is that they are gender neutral.
Now some may feel that all products are gender neutral, but I associate womens's products with women and men's product with men. For a mens' professional sport's team I guess I would prefer a sponsor associated with men's products. I don't think that makes me sexist but obviously others do.
