Since it's on my mind, I thought I would start a thread on it. Of course, once the results are in on Oct. 28th, it will all be moot.
But until then, it will be fun to speculate where the Sounders will end up when the final whistle blows for the regular season. I confess when it comes to these types of discussions, I start getting a headache considering all the possibilities, so I will leave most of that to you smarter types!
First, let's start out with the assumption that the Sounders will beat the Earthquakes at home. I know that is not a sure thing, given the MLS history the two clubs have had, but based on their form and the fact it will be played at the CLink, I think the Sounders have the advantage and should get 3 points.
That would give the Sounders 59 points and 18 wins- the two most important stats. Since we don't know what the final score will be, we can't determine Goal Differential (GD) and Goals For (GF).
What are the other matches that will have a bearing on the playoffs? I'm thinking the following (home team first):
Colorado
FC Dallas
SKC
LAFC
LAG
Houston
And for the sake of comparisons, here are the standings, from MLS.com:
Pts. MP W L D GD GF
1 Sporting KC 59 33 17 8 8 24 63
2 LAFC 57 33 16 8 9 17 67
3 FC Dallas 57 33 16 8 9 9 51
4 Seattle 56 33 17 11 5 14 50
5 Portland 54 33 15 9 9 7 53
6 RSL 49 34 14 13 7 -3 55
7 LA Galaxy 48 33 13 11 9 3 64
Unfortunately, there is no way the Sounders can take 1st, because SKC and LAFC are playing one another. A draw would give SKC 60 points, so that is that.
2nd place is only possible if FC Dallas lose or draw away in Colorado.
3rd place is definitely in the cards otherwise.
I don't want to hog all the scenarios, plus it gives me a headache(see above), so chime in!
