Hey all, I'll be honest. The MLS Covid-Cup isn't doing it for me. I've watched a few games and highlights out of curiosity but haven't been pulled in like I have with the european leagues lately. Basically, MLS is going to have to coordinate another Cascadia derby for me to watch more (and they will).
There's not much to celebrate when the world turns upside down through a pandemic, though it has presented opportunities to shift the way we work and how sporting events are played and consumed.
Back in May FIFA and the IFAB (International Football Affiliation Board) approved the change to a 5 substitution rule (only 3 windows to make those subs). This change has since been extended through 2021 and there are now talks to make it a permanent change. You will also have noticed the two water breaks approximately halfway between each half for a few minutes, regardless of temperature.
Next on the horizon is a potential 'temporary sub' for 10 mins in the event a player needs to be taken off the field to be properly evaluated in the concussion protocol. This would reduce external factors and time-pressure impacting the concussion diagnosis. The IFAB was open to this and planned on piloting the change during the Olympics this summer which have since been cancelled.

This past year we've also seen goal kicks no longer needing to clear the penalty box before teammates can join play.
The hand ball rule also changed this past year. In sum:

What are your thoughts on the changes? I figured I'd post here for maximum visibility. Any other changes you'd like to see that haven't been discussed? Use of VAR? Orange card with a hockey style power play? My potentially unpopular vote is to move the penalty spot back 2-3 yards and call penalties more consistently (corner kick shirt pulling).

The hand ball rule also changed this past year. In sum:
- Any goal scored or created with the use of the hand or arm will be disallowed this season even if it is accidental.
- The handball rule now has extra clarity because it does not consider intent by a player.
- If the ball hits a player who has made their body "unnaturally bigger" then a foul will be awarded.
- IFAB says that having the hand/arm above shoulder height is rarely a "natural" position and a player is "taking a risk" by having the hand/arm in that position, including when sliding.
