Say it with me.......DRAMAAAAAAA!
Hot damn! This is the biggest controversy in the football world since...I legitimately can’t think of anything else that has made pundits in England says, and this is a direct quote, “This will be the end of football.”
I’m not gonna say I support this Super League, but I’m not necessarily against it either. Manchester United, Liverpool, Tottenham, ManShitty, Chelsea, Arsenal, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus, AC Milan, and Inter Milan are the founding clubs, and more are expected to join. However, because of everyone losing their collective shit over this, Sky Sports is claiming some of the founding clubs may pull out.
The president of Real Madrid has gone on the record saying that FIFA
and UEFA have too much control and power over clubs and players. He says Super League clubs are trying to save soccer. He also mentioned that the Super League would allow them to try new ideas to engage a broader and younger audience (like shortening matches).
FIFA and UEFA are threatening sanctions—fines and bans—of clubs and players from Champions League, national team eligibility, etc. Several of the smaller (financially) club in the Prem are outspoken against Super League because “it prevents fair entry”—basically, any club who wants to join the Super League has to pay a fee; it’s like MLS in that regard, but the founding clubs will make all the decisions. Fans of Liverpool and Chelsea have protested outside their clubs’ training ground and matches.
From my perspective, this is all about money. Premier League, Serie A, La Liga, and FAs won’t profit from this. The founding clubs will rake in all the money (from membership fees, broadcasting, tickets, etc.). I really do not care—let them make their money and keep it out of the hands of two of the most corrupt and powerful organizations on the planet (UEFA and more so FIFA).
How this could be more of a blemish on the game than the 2022 WC to Qatar and their widespread human rights violations is pathetic! When it comes to human life, FIFA will turn a blind eye as long as there is money to be made. When it comes to cash, if it isn’t lining their pockets then it’s the worst thing ever.
Even if Super League never happens, all of the reactions are telling. Spanish courts rules players and clubs cannot be punished without a full and open investigation. In England, which is outside the EU now, there is talk of legislation to punish clubs (such as pulling work permits for foreign players—which IMO is very fucked up).
I’m just sitting here popping corn to snack on as the drama unfolds. 🤣
