We received an email today with the above subject line from the Sounders ticket office.
A new policy was implemented this season in which, if you gave them 10 day's notice you weren't going to attend a home match, they would return the price of your tickets back into your account balance. This worked pretty well for us since as you know, Kim and I missed many matches earlier this season due to her covid hospitalization & rehab (we didn't attend a match together until the disastrous Portland Home match on July 9). I relaxed, figuring I would use that money to pay for our seats for the playoffs, because of course the Sounders would make it into the playoffs, right? Right?
Here's how the email is phrased:
"ENHANCE YOUR MATCHDAY EXPERIENCE. The race for the playoffs is heating up, and with only four remaining home matches left in regular season, there is no better time than now to use your Return Ticket Credit on file. Looking for ideas on how to use your Return Ticket Credit?
• Use it to purchase additional tickets to bring friends, coworkers, and family. Sign into Account Manager to select your match and apply your credit to additional seats.
• Upgrade your seats for an enhanced matchday experience, including suites, premium, and club seats. Contact your Membership Executive to find the right opportunity for you and your group.
Your Return Ticket Credit cannot be used toward the 2023 season and will expire at the end of 2022."
It's obvious that the ticket office- like us- wasn't planning on STH using that money for anything other than paying for home playoff tickets. But the sad fact is that for the Sounders to host a playoff match, they would have to climb past five clubs to the #4 spot in the standings, currently being held by FC Dallas with 43 points- 10 more points than the Sounders currently have! Normally, no problem, but not with the form the Sounders are playing with now.
They do say this at the end- as an afterthought:
"REMINDER: If we host 2022 Playoff matches, you are automatically opted-in through our Pay As We Play program and your Return Ticket Credit will be automatically applied to your account balance, unless you opt-out during the Opt-Out window."
Hmmm, we shall see. I think we'd better make alternative plans...
