Wednesday, we travel north on I-5 to face the other Cascadia rival, Vancouver Whitec(r)aps. In terms of the Cascadia Cup, VAN are in first with 8 points; we are second with 4 points, but we have this match and our final match (home vs SCUM) to try to reclaim the regional trophy. More importantly, we are looking to secure homefield advantage and a higher seed for the playoffs,
We are 5th in the West with 50 points, and VAN occupy 7th just three points behind us. VAN have scored 50 goals (just four more than us) but have conceded 41 goals (seven more than us). Head-to-head in MLS, we are 19-12-10 against the Canadian Cascadia contingent. This season, they beat us 0-2 back in April and drew 1-1 a month later (both home matches for us). It is time for fricking revenge. We are coming off a largely uneventful yet still important 1-0 home victory over HOU. VAN will be looking to bounce back from their home match vs SCUM in which the hosts conceded the equalizer late in the first half for a 1-1 result. Their DP midfielder, Gauld (9 goals, 15 assists), did not feature in the draw, so, if he is available, he will be fresh, but their best striker, White, continued his goal-scoring and now sits atop the team with 15 goals scored (2 assists). Their other key threat s Picault who has scored 9 (2 assists).
Every point matters. But it matters more when it's against a rival. Hoping they'll be hearing "Jingle Bells" in BC Place after the final whistle. (On a personal note, Wednesday marks the first anniversary of my mum's passing, so I am extra hopeful for a win. She called them the "Vanhoover Whitecraps" for as long as I can remember haha!)
