Saturday is "Decision Day" for MLS and for the Cascadia Cup. We face off against our most hated rival (at least historically): Portscum Cinders. Win and we maintain 3rd in the West and hoist the Cascadia Cup. Draw or lose and the bad guys will celebrate the Cascadia Cup in our faces, and they could leapfrog VAN and end up in 8th. And then there is a Champions Cup berth on the line: win and we are in; draw and we need either CIN to lose at PHI or RSL to draw vs VAN; or if RSL lose vs VAN we are in regardless. Most important to me, of course, is just ending the regular season with a win to carry momentum into the playoffs...okay, that is secondary to me...the real thing for me is beating SCUM.
This season we are 1W-0D-1L against the Cinders (both matches were away). Last time we played them in Seattle was a 2-2 draw back on 2 September 2023. All-time MLS head-to-head, they have the upper hand: we have 17W-10D-20L, but let's make it 18 wins! SCUM have scored the second-most goals in the West (4th in the league) and conceded the 5th most in the West (10th most in the league). We boast the league's best defense but are only 9th best in the West (17th overall) for goals scored.
After the bye week, our very own Reed Baker-Whiting, Jon Bell, Stuart Hawkins, Nouhou, and Obed Vargas will be rejoining the squad from their respective call-ups. SCUM's Miguel Araujo and Maxime Crépeau will be heading back from their own national teams. Our hottest attacking players have been Morris, Rusnak, and Pauly Primetime (haha...Rothrock). Our CBs have been locked in defensively, and both Ragen and Yeimar are on the shortlist for Defender of the Year. And Frei...he is doing Frei things. As for the bad guys, their DP striker Jonathan Rodriguez has 16 goals (7 assists), DP midfielder Evander is in contention for MVP with 15 goals (18 assists), and then Felipe Mora has contributed another 14 goals (6 assists). TLDR version is that we know SCUM has proven goal scorers and is very goal dangerous. But their weaknesses are on defense and when they are caught in transition, and they have been struggling lately (last win was five matches ago).
We have been hot lately. Is it a fluke or is it our true form? No better opponent to test this than Portcsum Cinders. Let's build a f*cking bonfire 50 years in the making! EBFG

*Pekmic has only officiated three matches featuring SEA (1W-0D-2L); the one win was at home this season (2-0 win over NER on 6 July). He has only been in charge of one match featuring SCUM (a road draw). Given his lack of experience overall but particularly with big matches and faceoffs between rivals like this, I have doubts this match will end with 22 players on the pitch.
